On September 3, 2009, there was a serious Hindu Muslim riot in Miraj town (Sangli district of Maharashtra) when Murtis of Ganesh Ji were being taken out in procession for visarjan ceremony. A group of Muslim mobsters took strong exception to a tableaux depicting the slaying of Afzal Khan by Shivaji, a well known historical fact, and therefore attacked the Hindus.
