The cat is out of bag. The sole reason for lower-than-expected performance of the BJP in recent election results of Delhi Assembly was neither the popularity of Congress policies, nor the charisma of Sheila Dixit, as was being tom tomed by most political analysts and partisan media mandarins.  The real reason which enabled the Congress to win more seats in Delhi State elections was the quantum jump in the vote share of the Bahujan Samaj Party which rose to 14%, thereby extensively cutting into BJP’s vote share. All SCs and STs are Hindus.  Actually there was a steep decline in vote share of Congress Party which fell from 48.1 percent in 2003 to 40.3%, while the vote share of BJP increased from 35.2 percent to 36.3 percent. Yet due to our wonky electoral system in which the winners are elected by the first-past-the-post rule, BJP could not secure enough seats.    These figures refuted the prejudiced view of some journalists who faulted the veteran BJP leader, Prof. Vijay Kumar Malhotra, for the poor performance of BJP.   Seized by a fit of insta-punditry, that ultra secular columnist, Karan Thapar, even went on to suggest that Prof. Malhotra was unacceptable to Delhi voters!

It is well known that Muslims voters invariably unite to vote against the BJP due to the anti-Hindu diktats of their Ulema and community leaders.     They call it ‘tactical voting’, though it is sheer ‘communal’ voting.   Unfortunately the Hindus don’t vote en bloc for the BJP candidates. They don’t vote along communal lines opting to favour only Hindu candidates.  Therefore, the real reason for the failure to dislodge Congress in Delhi elections lies essentially in BJP’s inability to create adequate awareness about the grim threats facing the nation among Hindu voters by adequately  informing them.

The facile argument that the BJP’s reliance on projecting terrorism as a major threat did the party in is yet another canard. This unconvincing argument, frequently mouthed by some media analysts, is more of rhetoric than truth.  Media has been trying to revel in trivializing the jihadi threat by reducing it to the level of an irrelevant ‘item show’, implying that killing of thousands of innocents by jihadis does not bother Indian voters.   The narrative of non-importance of jihadi terror, frequently trotted by media  jockeys and political analysts, is laughable  indeed.  Educated though most Delhiites are, they are largely unaware of the diabolical dimensions of the jihadi campaign being executed to create a “seamless caliphate” from Indonesia to the Balkans by subjugating India.    It is unfortunate that the BJP failed to enlighten the Hindus about this stark truth.
