The terror attacks continue unabated. In the run up of Lok Sabha elections at least ten people were killed and more than 80 injured in three bomb blasts and two grenade attacks across Assam ahead of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s election meeting in the state. Recently the state of Assam has been witness to a spurt in terror attacks even when the nation struggles to overcome the shock of Mumbai 26/11 terror attack in which more than 100 people were killed and many times the number were injured. It is to be noted that the last time when terror attacks took place in Assam the Prime Minister had promised the people of taking stern measures against terrorism. It doesn’t seem an irony that terrorism has struck again more particularly ahead of his Assam visit. The terrorists are aware that our government can never practice what it preaches. Political opportunism has taken precedence over political will. India has been facing the wrath of terrorism for a very long time. In the recent years we have witnessed some of the deadliest attacks in the world. A large number of terror outfits are being aided and abetted by Pakistan’s ISI and provided safe havens in Pok where these outfits have built operational bases. The Pakistan based outfits that are mainly instrumental in organizing and carrying out terrorist attacks are Harkat-ul-Mujahideen(HUM), Harkat-ul-Jehad-al-Islami(HUJI), Jaish-e-Mohammad(JeM) and Lashkar-E-Toiba(leT) which have active linkage with Al-Qaeda. Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), which has followings in North India, Maharashtra and South, has been found actively participating and facilitating these terror attacks by providing its network at the beck and calls of these numerous terrorist outfits. Al Ummah, a trrorist outfit having base in Tamil Nadu is known for having linkages with Kashmiri and Pakistani terrorist outfits and at the same time remains connected with Islamic terrorist elements in Malaysia, Singapore to North East and Bangladesh. Apart from these terrorist outfits Dawood Ibrahim’s gang and other trans-national Mafiosi working for ISI provide logistical support to these terrorist outfits. Following the example of Pakistan, Bangladesh too joined in enhancing the capabilities of Islamic terror groups by allowing the infiltration of Bangladeshis in India. Bangladesh Rifles and terror groups like HUJI are reportedly active in facilitating such infiltrations so that these Bangladeshis may contribute to the ongoing terror operations in India. ISI too has extended its network in Bangladesh and acting in tandem with other terror groups. In the wake of 26/11 Mumbai terror attack the Indian government issued several statements purporting to deal strongly with Pakistan and its support to terrorism. Yet nothing has so far materialized. A number of North east rebel groups and their leaders have been operating from Bangladesh. Dhaka has refused to extradite Anup Chetia and Paresh Barua, among others. It is a pity that even in the face of clinching evidence against our neighbours we fail to act decisively and strongly. What is unfortunate is to see that our politicians keep shamelessly courting all those perpetrators of terrorism who have proven cases against them. While Congress is endlessly withholding the death sentence to Afzal, a convict in parliament attack case, CPM is courting Abdul Nasser Madani in Kerala to win elections. Such political opportunism is self-evident as to why we fail to act strongly on terrorism!
