Indian intelligence is proving to be soft underbelly of the country. In a recent case a second secretary rank officer Madhuri Gupta has been arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI. as per the media reports she had reportedly embraced Islam about six years ago. Madhuri Gupta also has a Ph.D on Islam and Sufism from JNU in the mid-1990s. It is turning out to be a story of a disgruntled Ministry of External Affairs official who chose to become a spy for Pakistani intelligence agencies. She had an illicit relationship with one of the Pakistani handlers. Yet, the Indian intelligence had no inkling about what was going on as Madhuri Gupta was freely mixing with the Pakistani intelligence agents and reporting them the information culled by dint of her position as an Indian diplomat. More revelations are still awaited as more people are reportedly getting embroiled in the spy ring.
While the investigating agencies are trying to grill Madhuri Gupta, another report of a Pakistani in the guise of a US national sneaking into the establishment of Indian Defence Strategy Analysis (IDSA) as a researcher is causing an issue of major concern. While the visa of this Pakistan origin US national has expired, he continues to stay in India that too in a sensitive defence establishment. The reported sale of ammunitions by CRPF personnels to the Naxalites also points towards the sorry state of affairs in para-military forces. Police is already dreaded by the common people for corruption and complicity of in various crimes. The overall situation speaks volumes of systemic failure exposing the country to security risks and dangers of worst kinds.
Every time any incident takes place in India the intelligence agencies are questioned as their capability to detect such incidents beforehand remains doubtful. Not only the intelligence agencies are proving ineffective in apprehending the incidents but they have even utterly failed in reporting corruption related cases. Corruption, crimes, terrorism and spy rings - all are result of ineffective intelligence in the country. Even then there is little effort to strengthen the intelligence set up and upgrade policing and law and order machinery. If the situation continues to remain same, weak intelligence my ultimately have crippling effect on the country.
