The Indian government has come up with the idea of having "Caste-Based" enumeration in the Census 2011, in principle. Is this what we wanted to witness in New India?  Even older India was scared of endorsing this "Bhasmasur", considering its aftermaths. Why time and again we are happy in creating these monumental blunders?  Are we trying to push INDIA again into the Dark Age?

Is government defying Nehru, Sardar Patel and Ambedkar: A Flashback

What was the stand taken by the framers of the Constitution and the first Cabinet after Independence which had stalwarts like Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, B R Ambedkar and Maulana Azad decided to do away with caste-based census which was seen by them as divisive unanimously? They were the torch-bearers of national policy, which government is still claiming. But is this what the government now interprets? Is it sick and tired of Nehruvian school of thought? Is Sardar Patel, Baba Saheb Ambedkar and Maulana Saheb obsolete for nation now? We need to get into the flashback to cross-check their stand.

This issue was first informally discussed in 1951 when Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime minister. Nehru took the view that the first census of independent India should not be caste-based. This will attack the very essence of Indian unity in later stages. The same was categorically specified by Sardar Patel.

This was revealed when a massive search was carried out in the cabinet secretariat archives after law minister Veerappa Moily wrote to Registrar General of India, asking whether there was a policy decision involved in not conducting a caste-based census.

In his speech of November 25, 1949, on his motion for the adoption of the Constitution, Dr B R Ambedkar observed: "I am of opinion that in believing that we are a nation, we are cherishing a great delusion. How can people be divided into several thousands of castes be a nation? ... These castes are anti-national: in the first place because they bring about separation in social life. They are anti-national also because they generate jealousy and antipathy between caste and caste. But we must overcome all these difficulties if we wish to become a nation in reality. For fraternity can be a fact only when there is a nation. Without fraternity, equality and liberty will be no deeper than coats of paint."

Unfortunately, those who claim that they are carrying Baba Saheb's legacy in this new India, are just destroying his vision. What have we achieved even after 63 yrs of independence? This is only the implication for putting pressure on the Supreme Court cap of 50% reservation, an extension of Vote Bank Politics. During the six decades of expected implementation of the Constitutional provisions the state and central governments have not devised mechanisms to review the impact of policies and programmes based on these provisions, which is sucking Indian integrity like anything. There has been only unending entry of castes into the reservation lists and no exit from them. The four Varnas has been transformed into thousand of castes and sub-castes. Everyone is ready to kill everyone to get their own pie. Unfortunately the poor section of this India has never seen this help extended to them in the name of reservation. The chaotic proliferation of judicial pronouncements has made the policies and programmes counter-productive. The logic is simple, these politicians want the exact number of caste-division, so that they can play and manipulate their power mathematics. This all development is leading towards a diabolic dimension.
